As the aunt of a 12-year-old fighting medulloblastoma and sister-in-law to a wonderful woman with Multiple Sclerosis, brain awareness is high on my list of priorities. This week The Dana Foundation and select partners are sponsoring Brain Awareness Week. March is also Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Awareness Month. So this week, I went about looking for how people are helping others become aware of injuries, diseases, and research involving the brain.
First, one of my pet projects. I’ve been participating in Eyewire, a game to help map the connections in the brain. Developed by the Seung Computational Neuroscience Lab at MIT, Eyewire is using citizen scientists to map the “connectome” that Dr. Seung spoke of in his TED talk in 2010.

The only problem with Brain Awareness week is the lack of a single hashtag by which you can follow posts. So, here are a few of the most populous hashtags celebrating Brain Awareness week. I’ll start with #brainweek.

A few other hashtags that caught my eye included #BrainAwareness, #BrainInjury, #Brain, and #TeenBrain. These were often used in conjunction with preceding hashtags, but they also had some posts that were uniquely their own.
